I have a 3725 router that is reporting the following syslog message:
%FAN-3-FAN_FAILED: Fans had a rotation error reported.
When I do a show environment all, I am getting the following message:
Fan status:
Warning- low fan rpm condition detected.
Both the the fans are functional and are rotating fine. How do I repair?

Hi,
The error means that the FAN is not rotating at the desired speed (or RPM).
Check this link on how to troubleshoot it (replacing it) http://www.cisco.com/en/US/docs/routers/access/3700/hardware/installation/guide/3700appA.html

Thanks Dandy. I found that link when I was doing my initial troubleshooting but it did not help much. The fan seems to be rotating at a proper speed but I will see about replacing it. Thanks for your help.

Fan rotation is detected by a led sensor, failure of which can cause on the error message with the fan working ok.
If you do not see the temperature rise too much, you can possibly ignore the message.
However the best choice would be to make sure the router is under maintenance contract, then get cisco TAC to RMA it.
Hope this helps, please rate post if it does!

Hi,
There's a difference what the eye can see and what the system can see :)
As Paolo mentioned, if you have an active maintenance, use it.

If your router is not under SMARTnet, there are some companies selling replacement fans for the 3725. Search on google and you will find them.
