4321 Out of space for upgrade

ryders1
Level 1
Level 1

I'm trying to upgrade from

16.06.09 to 17.06.05 on my 4321 router

Using this command to initiate the upgrade.

install add file bootflash:isr4300-universalk9.17.06.05.SPA.bin activate commit

The error I'm getting is below. It looks like it is a space issue, but I don't see anything else in the directory I can get rid of. I backed up the tracelogs and cleared them, but they came right back. Is there anything I am overlooking that could remove so I could get this upgrade completed? I considered moving to a different version if I could find one of a smaller size that would fit, but I would prefer to stay on a gold star version. I also had an identical device on the same version that had enough space to upgrade so I don't know why this one doesn't have enough. I don't think the difference in config is big enough to account for the lack of space. I would appreciate any ideas someone might have on this.

I am almost very certain this is a known bug about "block size" or the size of the new firmware.

A simple workaround is to boot the new version in Bundle Mode, clean up the flash (using the command

install remove inactive

) and convert to Install Mode.

Is it safe to assume the ROMMON has already been upgraded?

I did try running that command to clear some space, but all it outputs is my upgrade file. I did a different version to see if that made a difference so you will see 17.9.3 in the output instead of 17.6.5.

I will see if I can get the bundle mode to work.

Yes, I upgraded rommon first. It is on 6.12(2r)

#sho rom-monitor r0

System Bootstrap, Version 16.12(2r), RELEASE SOFTWARE
Copyright (c) 1994-2019 by cisco Systems, Inc.

Is deleting this file a possibility to free up the needed space?

Thanks,

Chuck

Yes, if it is related to older software no longer being used,

M.

Do not manually delete any of the

PKG files

The behaviour you are seeing is a known bug feature (and I cannot seem to find the right

phrase

to search for the Bug IDs).

The workaround of booting the new firmware version in Bundle Mode (and then convert to Install Mode) is the best workaround.

I have been looking at instructions for using bundle mode and I am not sure of this command.

boot system flash bootflash:isr4300-universalk9.17.06.05.SPA.bin

boot system bootflash:isr4300-universalk9.17.06.05.SPA.bin

Do I need to specify flash in the command or just

bootflash

? The output from the ? after entering

boot system

is:

boot system ?
WORD TFTP filename or URL
flash Boot from flash memory
ftp Boot from a server via ftp
mop Boot from a Decnet MOP server
rcp Boot from a server via rcp
tftp Boot from a tftp server

That makes me think I need the

boot system flash bootflash:isr4300-universalk9.17.06.05.SPA.bin instead of boot system bootflash:isr4300-universalk9.17.06.05.SPA.bin

I do have a backed up config from a device of the same model that omits the flash part of that command. Maybe it works both ways? I don't have a device I can test with currently and I have been using install mode in the past.

Remove any existing boot variable statement in the config and replace with this.

Save the config and reboot.

Once the switch boots up the correct version (Bundle Mode), change the boot variable statement to point to the

packages.conf

file.

Initiate the Install Mode and let the router reboot in Install Mode.

That worked. I just finished the upgrade and reloaded with install mode set. Thank you.

Yes, this was deleted after I grabbed the logs. It wasn't large enough to make a difference with the space issue though.
