Look at my post above with the picture of the router.

Hello,

what is on your flash ? Post the output of:

rommon: dir:

dear all,

I started to download the IOS from tftp server and it is giving me "TIMED OUT" error.

"TFTP: Operation terminated" [TIMED OUT"]

Nothing is present in my "flash0" at the moment.

If nothing is in flash0: then what about flash1:?

In case you have not followed the initial thread, I have accedentally erased the flash and lost the IOS. so , now i kept the IOS in the tftp directory and that is from where I am trying to recover from it .

and my router is in rommon mode now .

Everyone wants to know if there is a CF in flash0: or flash1:  If there is no CF available, then I don't see why this could move any further.

If you read my earlier post, I have discussed what is the FASTEST and EASIEST way to move an IOS into the CF (without using xmodem or TFTdnld).  And you're currently running into problems uploading the IOS to the router.  I'm trying to help you skip this process.

If the router does have compact flash that is working then the suggestion from Leo is the most effective way to recover. If compact flash is not available or not working then using tftpdnld as suggested in a previous post should work.

Can the original poster do the set command in rommon and post the output, then attempt the tftpdnld command and post output from that? If it does not work then the output may help us understand why it is not working.

Other suggestions:

- are you sure that the new image file is in the directory that the tftp server is looking in?

- are you sure that there is IP connectivity between the router and the tftp server?

- when you attempt tftpdnld is there any indication in the server or its logs that it is seeing the attempt?

Dear All,

I have finally manged to boot the router from TFTP server, however , the IOS is not being saved in flash. I followed the instruction the following link:

https://supportforums.cisco.com/t5/network-infrastructure-blogs/booting-cisco-router-from-a-tftp-server/ba-p/3101600

and still the router couldnt save the IOS and after a restart it goes right back to "rommon" mode.

please help,

Dear All,

I am almost finished now, my router has now booted from tftp server.

Can anybody tell me the final steps of saving my IOS from the tftp to flash and set it to boot from flash from now on wards, I can feel that i am almost finished with the process.

thanks.

copy tftp: flash:

boot system flash: . . .

hi Joseph,

tnx for the reply, please see below the error i am getting while trying to copy flash: tftp:

please see the attached image for the error i am gettting.

An issue accessing the tftp server? It's up and running, the filename is correct, you can reach it across network, etc.?

The article that you refer to is about how to boot from a TFTP server from rommon and in the introduction suggests that it is dealing with situations in which you do not want to copy the new image to the router. So it did not include any steps about how to get the new image stored locally on the router. The suggestion from Joseph points in the right direction. You need to copy the new image from TFTP to flash and then you need to update the boot system command to point to the new image (and do not forget to save running config to startup).

It is puzzling that you were able to access the TFTP server when booting from rommon but not able to access it when the router is running. Are you sure that you have used exactly the correct address and file name? Perhaps you can post for us the exact commands that you used in rommon so that we can compare what the router was doing from rommon and compare that to what it is doing now?

Can the router ping to the address of the TFTP server?

I cannot fathom why it soooo difficult to eject the CF and copy the IOS directly into the CF using a card reader.  This would save everyone a lot (and I mean A GREAT LOT OF TIME) troubleshooting why TFTP isn't working.

If I was in a situation like this, my priority would be to get the router to boot the IOS from the CF.  Period.

My suspicion is there is no valid/supported CF available.

Unsubscribe.

Dear Leo,

tnx for your quick reply and concerns, what you are saying is right,

the thing is , I dont have a flash card reader at the moment , so i am stuck with TFTP server, that is why,

from the other suggestions above ,  i think my issue is with the TFTP server it self, so , l am going to reset my TFTP allover again now and will let you know all you guys my progress.

thank you all.
