ASR 1002 connecting to 7609

Hi All

Recently acquired a new ASR 1002 to replace my PE router(cisco 7206 G2 engine). The old cisco 7206 was connecting to cisco 7609 which is the gateway router with no problem.

After replacing the ASR 1002 with cisco 7206,the link connecting to the gateway router (Cisco 7609) never came up.

Is there any special SFP or GBIC module needed to interconnect this two nodes ?

On the ASR, am using GLC-LH-SM and on the other side is GBIC module (WS-G5486-C)

The directly connected interfaces show diifferent output. The ASR will show interface UP protocol UP while the 7609 will show interface DOWN and protocol DOWN.

What am i missing ?

Please help.

How about the loopback test on ASR1k. Can you try changing the port on the ASR1k side. Also try changing the SFP on the ASR1k side if possible.

if that doesnt help, Could you try to perform a soft reset of the SPA on ASR1k (hw-module sub-slot 0/0 reload) and see if that helps.

both sides are having the media type LX, thus i dont think the SFP type could be a problem. other thing would be interesting to check what kind of fiber you are using like MMF or something else.

Thanks

Check for any udld configuration on 7600 interface. Its weird that ASR1k is showing UP/UP where as 7609 showing down/down. UDLD is my first suspect.

Can you share the output of show interface <int_num> from both the routers.

Thanks

Hello Vinit,

thanks for your swift response.

I now connected the ASR to a Cisco 7206 G1 with the same Gbic module still thesame result.

Here s the output form the Cisco 7206:

GigabitEthernet0/3 is down, line protocol is down

  Encapsulation ARPA, loopback not set
  Keepalive set (10 sec)
Full-duplex, 1000Mb/s, link type is force-up, media type is LX

this is the output from the ASR

ASR1002#sh int g0/0/3

0 lost carrier, 0 no carrier, 0 pause output
0 output buffer failures, 0 output buffers swapped out

Interesting to see the output. On the 7200 side, if you see the reliability of the link is 136/255. this means that there is a Layer-1 problem. the reliability is low. Can you please try changing the fiber cable or the GBIC itself on the 7200 side and see if that helps.

Also, is there any patch panel in the middle?

Thanks

I also realised thesame thing .On the ASR its 255/255 and on the 7200 ,     reliability 136/255, txload 1/255, rxload 1/255.

Which is interesting .

is not passing through a patch panel .Is direct fibre cable .

i tried doing a test by isolating the ASR and doing a loopback.See the ouput:

Router#sh int g0/3
GigabitEthernet0/3 is up, line protocol is up
Hardware is BCM1250 Internal MAC, address is 0018.7384.f419 (bia 0018.7384.f419)
  Description: **** TO ASR *****
  Internet address is 10.10.10.1/30
MTU 1500 bytes, BW 1000000 Kbit, DLY 10 usec,
     reliability 255/255, txload 1/255, rxload 1/255
  Encapsulation ARPA, loopback not set
  Keepalive set (10 sec)
Full-duplex, 1000Mb/s, link type is force-up, media type is LX
output flow-control is unsupported, input flow-control is unsupported
ARP type: ARPA, ARP Timeout 04:00:00
Last input 00:00:04, output 00:00:04, output hang never
Last clearing of "show interface" counters never
Input queue: 0/75/0/0 (size/max/drops/flushes); Total output drops: 0
  Queueing strategy: fifo
  Output queue: 0/40 (size/max)
  5 minute input rate 0 bits/sec, 0 packets/sec
  5 minute output rate 0 bits/sec, 0 packets/sec
16 packets input, 1878 bytes, 0 no buffer
     Received 13 broadcasts, 0 runts, 0 giants, 0 throttles
     0 input errors, 0 CRC, 0 frame, 0 overrun, 0 ignored
     0 watchdog, 5 multicast, 0 pause input
0 input packets with dribble condition detected
     153 packets output, 20062 bytes, 0 underruns
6 output errors, 0 collisions, 3 interface resets
     0 babbles, 0 late collision, 0 deferred
6 lost carrier, 0 no carrier, 0 pause output
0 output buffer failures, 0 output buffers swapped out

How about the loopback test on ASR1k. Can you try changing the port on the ASR1k side. Also try changing the SFP on the ASR1k side if possible.

if that doesnt help, Could you try to perform a soft reset of the SPA on ASR1k (hw-module sub-slot 0/0 reload) and see if that helps.

both sides are having the media type LX, thus i dont think the SFP type could be a problem. other thing would be interesting to check what kind of fiber you are using like MMF or something else.

Hi Vinit,

i a have VERY interesting scenario.I dont know what kind of MAGIC happens. When i did the loopback test to toward the 7200,the interface show UP UP.I left the test on(for about 30 mins or so) while doing other things.

After reading your last post,i normalized the connection.to my suprise, the interface came up without changing nothing.......

Router#sh int g0/3

  5 minute output rate 0 bits/sec, 0 packets/sec

Router#ping 10.10.10.2 rep 100

Am currently doing a similar test with a different gbic, spf and fibre cable.

Thanks for your help.

It may also be possible that the fiber might not have been connected properly earlier. the reason i am saying is the reliability was showing low. The reliability should never be low.

Anyways, Glad that things are working fine now.

Hi...

After going through that tedious testings, i came to the conclusion that the issue was on the fibre jumper i was using. There are two different fiber jumper(all SMF) provided by two different companys/providers.One of the providers' fiber will always show interface UP protocol UP on the ASR1002-X and interface UP and protocol down on any other router(7200 or 7600) connected to ASR1002-x with a poor reliability.

Getting that fiber from our old provider , and testing that with the ASR and the 7200 and 7600,it was realized that certain type of fibre (both MMF and SMF) doesn't work with the ASR.

With the old fiber, the ASR is now integrated into the production network.

Thanks Vinit.

Glad that its working fine now. I was suspecting a patch panel in middle (jumper in this case) coz one side showed up/up and other side showed down/down.

Since its all working fine now, I think we are good here.

Great working with you on this issue.

Vinit
