Bandwidth Measure with PING

Hello all,

I need to utilize a link to the maximum bandwidth.
The Link will be monitored with PRTG. Also I will decrease the load- interval to 30 secondst have a more granular result.

Is it possible to do this with a ping from the Cisco router. What are the recommended parameter? One of the requirement to use a specific interface as the source.
Should I also increase the size gradually ?

Thanks
Udo

A better alternative to pump traffic down a link in order to measure bandwidth utilisation is IPerf

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Iperf

If you don't like the command line there is a GUI front available known as jperf.

Hi,

Yes it is possible to do it form a cisco router, but you will have to keep a eye on the cpu utilization of the router from which

you are originating the traffic.

As you will be monitoring the real time traffic using PRTG, there is no need to play with the load interval under interface level.

The datagram size depends on the amount of icmp traffic you want to generate.

You can use extened ping to generate traffic from a specific interface.

like you said it is advise able to increase the size gradually.
