%BGP-3-NOTIFICATION: sent to neighbor X.X.X.X 4/0 (hold time expired) 0 bytes

We have recently upgraded a Cisco 7600 series (sup7203bxl) router to version 12.2SRC6 (earlier version 12.2.SRC2). Since the upgrade we get bgp holdtime message to external bgp peer. Is it a coinsident or a know problem. The Troubleshoot Guide of BGP refers to MTU problems, but we can succesfully ping with MTU 1500.

Any ideas?

Hi,

Have you changed the keepalive interval on your router? It seems as you have low hold time interval.

Reza

No the timers where the default (180 hold, every 60 seconds).

We rolled back to the older ios version, because we got complaints from our peers for flapping and problem was resolved. Still do not know what caused it. We will try to upgrade again at a later stage. It seems that network packets where droped randomly (we noticed except from BGP some BFD packets as well not being received). Perhaps there is an issue between the IOS version and the Line Cards (we are using OSM-4 GE-WAN), although I couldn't find any known bug.
