We have a couple of 7606-S / RSP720 core routers, each populated with one X6724-SFP and three X6708 cards, and we're looking to replace them with something else, mainly due to the oversubscription limits of the X6708s being reached more and more often lately.
Now, about the requirements... nothing special - MPLS, vlan mapping (maybe even selective q-in-q), 40G-readiness, high 1G/10G port density come to mind; physical size is also important so, if I were to look at something similar in terms of rack units occupied, I would put C6807XL, ASR9006, Nexus7004 and Nexus7706 on the list.
On the other hand, simple layer2 configs (things like "switchport trunk allowed vlan ..." or "spanning-tree vlan ... cost ...") would be nice (old habits die hard) which, together with pricing, probably rule out the ASR9K. I have no idea about the Nexus price range, but port options and density certainly look appealing.
The C6807XL looks really attractive at this point, but I have a few questions here:
- is there any 40G card on the roadmap other than the X6904 (something with more backplane bandwidth)?
- how many vlan mappings and dot1q-tunnel vlan mappings (selective q-in-q), if any, do X6904-40G and the C6800-*P10G cards support?
- the datasheet says that it supports C6800-SUP6T, and I could also find SUP10 mentioned in some presentation slides - are there any details (technical, release dates) available about these?
Any other hints of any kind (pricing, features, performance, etc.) on "C6807XL vs. Nexus7K/7.7K" are of course welcome.
Thank you.
