C9500-12Q IOS-XE 17.6.4 - CVR-QSFP-SFP10G going ErrDisabled

Hello,

Have have some C9500-12Q switches in a HA Pair, using AOC for Cisco StackWise Virtual setup.  Using CVR-QSFP-SFP10G to change a 40G QSFP to 10G connection, LR.

When running IOS-XE 17.3.6 everything is working properly.  CVR-QSFP-SFP10G with 10G sfp is connected and AOC stacking ports all look good, Transceiver types are showing properly when doing a show interface status.

Upgraded to IOS-XE 17.6.4, or 17.6.5, and all seems fine but the CVR-QSFP-SFP10G with 10G sfp now either shows as 10G transceiver type or Unknown.  And the following log messages appear:

%PLATFORM_PM-6-MODULE_ERRDISABLE: The inserted SFP module with interface name Fo1/0/9 is not supported
%PM-4-ERR_DISABLE: gbic-invalid error detected on Fo1/0/9, putting Fo1/0/9 in err-disable state

Do the normal shut / No shut on the interface but the interface status is not connected and the link is down.

The AOC cables connect but the transceiver types are blank.  Cosmetic but wanted to mention this.

When I downgrade these switches back to IOS-XE 17.3.6 everything goes back to normal and interfaces connect.

Both the CVR-QSFP-SFP10G and AOC are third party.

Anyone experience this?

Both the CVR-QSFP-SFP10G and AOC are third party. - this may be the reason latest version of code not supporting 3rd party, I am sure Cisco TAC can not take this case, since 3rd party optics.

I have seen some time back this bug but looks it repeating.

How to Ask The Cisco Community for Help

I know Cisco ends TAC Cases when it comes to 3rd party optics.

Interesting that on the 9500-12Q this issues occurs but on the 9500-24Y4C this issue does not occur.  I know Gen1 versus Gen2 switches.

Saw that bug and unfortunately does not work in my case

Thanks

have you collected show interface x/x and logs ?

This did the trick for me when I was doing some testing :

no errdisable detect cause gbic-invalid
service unsupported-transceiver

On what hardware and software did this work for you on?

In my case these commands did not resolve the issue.

Thanks

Try and cold reboot the two switches.

This will not work when I have to upgrade remote sites.  I also tried 17.9.2 code with same issue.  But when I downgraded to 17.3.6 all interfaces went back to normal operations.

Thanks

Raise a TAC Case.  17.3.X and 17.6.X will be EoS soon.  There will be, at the very least, two more firmware release for that train.  Everyone is encouraged to migrate to 17.9.X.

Open a TAC case with EUMA or NAM/LATAM/RTP and maybe they will track down the cause of the bug.  I have seen several IOS-XE bugs where Cisco released fixes to get 3rd party/non-Cisco branded optics to work.

Hi Leo,

I was thinking of opening a TAC case but in the past I have had the Engineer close the case as soon as they see the 3rd party Optics   I don't have any Cisco brand optics laying around to test.

What region was the TAC Case routed to?

Hi Leo,

I am usually routed to the eastern or mountain timezones of North America

Try again with the same timezones.

Hi Leo,

Actually we were debating opening a TAC case on Monday. But a few of us have experienced cases being closed because of 3rd party optics.  I understand Cisco's position about the optics but the price of the 3rd party is a fraction of the cost of the Cisco Optics. Some we get 10 3rd party for 1 Cisco transceivers.

At least try.  17.9.3 drops in one week. Even if this bug is not fixed in 17.9.3, Cisco has no visibility of this bug.

CSCvn98185 & CSCvt25692 are good examples of a 3rd party optic bug.  There are precedence for the TAC agent to accept the case.

Hi Leo

I saw these bugs on Friday.  Thanks.

I will post an update on Monday if I have time to contact TAC.  I contacted the 3rd party optics manufacturer in case they were aware of any issues or if they had any updates firmware for these products.
