cisco 1811 router question

Hello all,

I have  a cisco 1811 router with 12.4(6) IOS, I would like to ask can I use this as a layer 2 switch?

When I issue vlan ID command it gives me " Invalid input detected", I need use this device as switch to create different vlan on and the connect the f0 port to a ASA

Hi Rouzbeh,

1811 is router, so you can not create vlans the same as you do it on switches, however you can create sub-interfaces with dot.1q tagging

Here are 2 examples:

interface Ethernet0/1.100
encapsulation dot1Q 100
ip address 10.100.5.254 255.255.255.0
!
interface Ethernet0/1.611
encapsulation dot1Q 611
ip address 10.100.7.254 255.255.255.0
