Cisco 881 load-balancing

Hi there,

My name is Bart and at this moment im learning for my CCNA certificate.

I have the last months configured a lot of Cisco 800 series routers for a couple of companies.

But at this moment i have a problem with one of them.

The router has connection with the internet, and on the otherside connection with an inside LAN networks.

Users can use VPN Client to the device and everything works OK.

BUT, when one of the users in the INSIDE lan network update her software or download software or ..... and the download / software update server has no limitspeed, (example when he do a update with software Solidworks), than doesn't the other users have internet connection or very slow!

The Cisco Router gives the user (who is updating his software) all bandwith of the internet connection.

So, my question, can i set-up a limit or load-balancing.

Than have the other users no troubles when one of them is updating his software.

The internet connection with the ISP is an 10 MB down and 10 MB up line.

Thanks,

Bart

Hi Bart,

There are different ways of achieving what you want to do using QoS policing. You need to think about classifying the traffic and then apportioning bandwidth to suit your needs.

Hi Mfurnival,

Thanks for your answare.

I have look to the traffic on the Cisco router,

But witch commands can i use to set-up an bandwith limit etc.

Thanks

Bart

Bart,

It is hard to answer that question fully without seeing the topology of your network but you could create a service policy that either prioritizes VPN traffic or polices non-VPN traffic. But you need to be more specific about IP addresses etc.

Hi Mfurnival,

Well, here some information.

There are a couple of VPN users. I Think 5 Users with VPN Client.

I think that in the LAN Network 60 devices connect to the internet.

The IP adres range is: 192.168.36.0 / 24.

Port forwarding:

25 > SMTP (Exchange)

80 / 443 > Webmail (Exchange)

(..) > Blackberry port

Cisco isn't a DNS / DHCP Server, ONLY gateway for 50 - 80 devices.
