Cisco 891 configuration without connecting to a modem

I have a new Cisco 891-K9 router.  I would like to configure it before removing the old router from the network.  The instructions ask one to connect the router to the modem before setup.

When I connect a PC to Port FE0 the connection light on FE0 flickers for a few seconds, then turns off.  I can't connect to the router.

Am I just being hopeful that I can configure the router without bringing down the network by disconnecting the existing router?

thanks

mark

OK, that answers the first problem.

The second is that when I try to connect with an ethernet cable to a PC I cannot.  When rebooting the router the FE0 light comes on and blinks for a while, maybe 20 seconds, then turns off and the OK light then turns on.

I am using the yellow cable that came with the router

Get console cable to connect to the router and post output as suggested in the past post, since we are not sure what is router condition, is this booted ? or got into ROMMON mode?

or you can perform factory reset

The problem now is that, though I can get a serial port communication going, I cannot get an html link to a computer.  The terminal shows that

%LINEPROTO-5-UPDOWN: Line protocol on Interface FastEthernet0, changed state to up,

When I try to use a browser to connect to 10.10.10.1 it can't get through.

Using the command prompt on the PC I find that no IP address has been assigned.

Hello
If you have space in the comms rack,Rack the new router up and attach a cat cable to its console port, Then through your cable mgt attach it to a wall outlet in your IT room, so you could then console onto the new router from you IT room and at the same time have a telnet/ssh session to you existing live router.
This way you can slowly and methodically copy the configuration from old rtr to new and when your ready to test simply unplug the connections from old to new rtr and test, if it doesn’t work just re cable back to old router..

Yes, I think that I have enough connectivity to do that, but do I have enough brains to do with without error?  That is why I was hoping for the graphic interface.  The old router is a linksys RV082, so the configuration is not identical.
