Cisco hardware - VDSL replacement for SKY SR102 @ 80Mbps

Hi folks - as per the title.

I've spent way too long scouring through Cisco 800 / 1000 / 2000 & even 3000 series routers specifications and numerous forums.  I still don't have a satisfactory answer to my conundrum!

I'm CCENT studying for CCNA.  Have 80Mbps (download) SKY broadband at home.  Initially I thought a basic 800 series would do the job of replacing my sky router but then got involved in looking at throughputs and spec sheets.  What a minefield.

Basically - I want to replace the SKY router with something without breaking the bank (so a 2nd hand ebay job or similar) and not at the expense of under-utilising my 80Mbps circuit by restricting it to a router only capable on handling 15Mbps throughput...and I'm failing!

Some people saying they're using an 887va and getting >70mbps out of them, others saying they can't get anywhere near that.  Inevitably that leads me to look at - no integrated VDSL ports and into more expensive routers requiring WIC cards and considerable expense.  Considering that SKY give you the SR102 and it *appears* to be capable of 80Mbps throughput I'm stunned that i'd need the following:

From what I'm reading I need a 3925 router with a VDSL WIC and licensing - just to connect home broadband to a test lab @ 80Mbps?  Seriously

I know I COULD use the SKY router as the internet router and just back another switch off that but it's really not the intention.  I want VDSL routing done by the Cisco router but it doesn't need to do a great deal else as I'm intending backing that straight onto a Cisco f/w (as yet undecided) and switches.

The ideal would be functionality for the router to be able to connect to a 3rd party VPN solution (I use digibit VPN for privacy).  It also needs to be able to support VLANS as I will need this for my CCNA labs.

Can anybody suggest the actual hardware I require to achieve this?  I'm happy to go with an 800 series if indeed it is up to the job but if not, is there a sensible and cost effective way for a student to pay for this out of his pocket ?  Incidentally the reason I want the router to handle the 80Mbps is that I do intend it also being my full time home router as well as Lab Gateway.

Many thanks to those H/W experts in the know.

Kind regards.

Rob.

Hello,

you will need at least the ISR 1100, which has a throughput of up to 350Mbps. Depending on the model, they cost between $500 and $1,000...
