clockrate command (VERY URGENT PLEASE)

hi all,

i am aware that the clockrate command is set on router if it is to be used as the DCS part of a connection.

In my situation the FR switch of the telco will do the DCE part.

However , on the newly aqkuired cisco 1841 IOS v. 12.4 the CLOCKRATE 2000000 command is set on the serial interface.

On the 1721 router it is not there by default.

My question is this ????

I have tried to remove the clockrate command but it does not move from there.

How can i remove it, or is this a new ios feature and it will be disabled automatically when it senses that the other site is a DCE ???

Please i need your help urgently as i am configuring the router for someone else to install, so i cannot observe this my self.

Thank you,

George

Hello,

what is "show interface" telling you? Does the 1841 consider the interface to be DCE?

What is the error message - if any - when you try to delete the command from the interface?

Regards, Martin

P.S.: can you post the config and the show interface ?

EDIT: the default behaviour of the clock rate command on an interface is, that it will be removed from the config in case the interface is not DCE. There will be an error message telling you, that this command is only accepted on DCE interfaces in case you enter it on a DTE interface. No harm done. So you should be fairly safe even when the command is in the config.

Hope this helps!

HI George,

Pls be aware that there are two types of DTE/DCE interfaces that you need to be aware of - one is at the physical layer and the other is at the data link (FR) layer. In the case of the clockrate command, this is at the physical layer. This simply means that the serial interface will be providing the physical interface clocking signals. That does not mean that your FR interface has to be a DCE. You can perfectly well configure the FR interface as a DTE and it should still work.

Hope that helps - pls rate posts that help.

Hello,

so the 1841 considers the interface to be DCE (this is OSI layer 1). You can conclude this from the bits activated on the serial.

DCD=up DSR=up DTR=down RTS=down CTS=up

For FR the router is DTE - just as a side note, which has nothing to do with your clock rate command.

LMI DLCI 0 LMI type is CCITT frame relay DTE

So back to your problem. Once the serial cable is connected the software senses from the volatge levels received whether it is DCE or DTE.

So you could try to shut the interface and remove the "clock rate" command. Nevertheless assuming no hardware failure is causing this, everything should work out normal.

You might understand, that I can not rule out a hardware failure based on the info at hand.

In case you absolutely want to be sure you would have to take a second router, a serial back-to-back and test the outcome.

Hope this helps! Please rate all posts.

Hi all,

All replies appreciated and will post Ratings as soon as possible.

The guy installing the router said everything fine.

So when i get a chance to observe the behaviour of the router i will let u know. I will install two 1841s tomorrow, one of them with multilink ppp, so i wil have the chance to observe it myself and commend on it.

Thank u all again.

The command should be no clock rate. You do not need to specify the speed. Note that there is a space between clock and rate.

HI George,

Enter in 'default interface serial0/0/0' in config mode and see if that clears it.

Hope that helps - pls rate posts that help.
