Hi Sir,
I have installed an NM-2CE1T1-PRI network module on a Cisco 3845 ISR, connected to an E1 line using cable CAB-E1-RJ45BNC.
The configuration is as follows:
!
card type e1 1
!
controller E1 1/0
channel-group 0 unframed
!
interface Serial1/0:0
ip address 1.1.x.x.255.255.252
!
The router is connected to a remote router over the E1 line. I received the following error messages showing controller E1 1/0 going up and down:
*Sep 27 14:14:24 CCT: %CONTROLLER-5-UPDOWN: Controller E1 1/0, changed state to up
*Sep 27 14:14:26 CCT: %LINK-3-UPDOWN: Interface Serial1/0:0, changed state to up
*Sep 27 14:14:27 CCT: %CONTROLLER-5-UPDOWN: Controller E1 1/0, changed state to down (LOS detected)
*Sep 27 14:14:28 CCT: %CONTROLLER-5-UPDOWN: Controller E1 1/0, changed state to up
*Sep 27 14:14:29 CCT: %LINEPROTO-5-UPDOWN: Line protocol on Interface Serial1/0:0, changed state to up
*Sep 27 14:14:31 CCT: %CONTROLLER-5-UPDOWN: Controller E1 1/0, changed state to down (LOS detected)
*Sep 27 14:14:32 CCT: %CONTROLLER-5-UPDOWN: Controller E1 1/0, changed state to up
*Sep 27 14:14:34 CCT: %CONTROLLER-5-UPDOWN: Controller E1 1/0, changed state to down (LOS detected)
*Sep 27 14:14:34 CCT: %LINEPROTO-5-UPDOWN: Line protocol on Interface Serial1/0:0, changed state to down
*Sep 27 14:14:35 CCT: %CONTROLLER-5-UPDOWN: Controller E1 1/0, changed state to up
*Sep 27 14:14:36 CCT: %CONTROLLER-5-UPDOWN: Controller E1 1/0, changed state to down (LOS detected)
*Sep 27 14:14:37 CCT: %CONTROLLER-5-UPDOWN: Controller E1 1/0, changed state to up
*Sep 27 14:14:38 CCT: %CONTROLLER-5-UPDOWN: Controller E1 1/0, changed state to down (LOS detected)
*Sep 27 14:14:40 CCT: %LINK-5-CHANGED: Interface Serial1/0:0, changed state to reset
I yet to perform a hard plug loopback test on the RJ-45 E1 port. However from the error messages above, is it indicative of a port problem or line problem?
Please advise.
Thank you.

Hi Lim,
The controller is actually getting a LOS(loss of signal). It is basically a line problem
Make sure the framing and line codes match on both sides.
Try changing the frame mode
you can check the current settings from sh controllers e1 1/0

Hi Narayan,
My E1 controller is configured for the following settings:

as indicated in the output of "sh controller e1 1/0 brief" below:

Should I check with the telco what framing and line code I should be configuring?

Please check below link if you did not read it. You can double confirm the loopback plug is wired correctly.
http://www.cisco.com/en/US/tech/tk713/tk628/technologies_tech_note09186a008010059a.shtml
Please provide the 'show interface' & 'show controller" then it will tell lots of info.
Check below for troubleshooting E1:

Hope this helps.

Hi,
I'm aware of the RJ-45 hard plug loopback test. But I yet to perform the test. Just want to know if the error messages are indicating port problem or line problem.

Hi Lim, I suspect there is cable or the PTT problem. Could you check the troubleshoot link that I provided before ? And please check w/ PTT for the correct / suggested config. for the router. I am sorry that I am located at HK that the Internet access still unstable, I am hardly access this forum at the moment.
Hope this helps.

Hi Jack,
I've done the hard plug loopback test on the E1 ports today. Results are positive; the pings with various data patterns resulted in no interface error counters.
I'm checking with the telco on the correct/suggested config for the E1 controller (e.g. framing, linecode, etc).
I have similar setup using the VWIC2-2MFT-T1/E1 + CAB-E1-RJ45BNC at another customer site, which work fine. Not sure about this NM-2CE1T1-PRI.
Will keep you guys posted the next time I test the line.
Thank you.
B.Rgds,
Lim TS
