Hardware issue - Earthing arrangements

Hi

On a 6500 chassis in the UK should the chassis be bonded to earth in addition to the Earth in the IEC lead.

If bonding is required is this 4mm and does it go to the earth in the cabinet or back to the main earting terminal in the comms room.

Thanks.

Earthing the chassis via ground lug is required only if the switch is not hosted into a rack that is earthed as well.

So if the rack itself is well earthed there is no need for additional provision, as the chassis rackmount screws are doing the job already.

Hope this helps, please rate post if it does!

Remember, Earth is always Earth - it's the same Earth.

Beware, there could be differences in potential when there is different distance from Earth. Earth in server room will have some voltage, which will be higher that actual Earth and different than Earth in different room.

Also 0 is sometimes (i'm not sure how often) goes back through separate wires to the transformation stations.

So it's not the same Earth after all, sliderv :)

That reminds me a bit of the high-end high-fidelity systems where earthing is a big concern and "ground loops" are avoided like the plagues. Fortunately networking is much, much more tolerant!
