Have you ever cleared counters on a serial interface and killed your WAN connection?

I have router running 12.4(24)T2, RELEASE SOFTWARE (fc2) and I have had devastating results issuing a 'clear counters s0/0/0' command.

This knocked out my MPLS connection! What am I doing wrong? It has happened to me twice now at 2 different remote locations. Not good for the career. Anybody have the same issue ever? Thanks[

do you have any logs on the router we can look at before and after you did a clear counter?

Hi,

Please use "clear counters" in privilige mode only. This will clear counters on all interfaces.

I used to do this many times without any disconnects.

Please click on the correct answere if this answered your question.

Hi,

Please use "clear counters" in global config mode. This will clear counters on all interfaces.
I used to do this many times without any disconnects and this is recommended as per best practice.

The issue may lie in the configuration of the serial interface:

interface Serial0/0/0
description TO AT&T MPLS ID:
ip address 172.16.2.25 255.255.255.252
ip flow egress
encapsulation ppp
service-module t1 clock source internal
service-module t1 timeslots 1-24
service-policy output VOIP

Someone was saying that the clock should be line on a serial interface.

I am going to the site this weekend so will issue command from console and check results.

also plan on opening a tac case for this.

version is 12.4(24)T2, RELEASE SOFTWARE (fc2)

Just about any time you get serial carrier services, you should take clock source from the line - not internal.

watch some of your low level counters (frame crc0 disappear after you change
