Im having a fundamental problem i think. Im getting onto Hyperterminal and i thought it would just start with the computer im on but its blank and doesn't let me type anything. How do i connect to my actual computer and then telnet to the devices like my 2610 router that i have an ip and mask set up? Also should i just forget about using hyperterminal and start using teraterm? or any other terminal programs you think i should learn on?

Terraterm is good. I tend to use this more than HT.
Initial config of your CCNA lab, use the console cable. Try to avoid using a USB-to-serial converter because some won't let you do xmodem.

Most computers have a serial computer at the back. Some old laptops also have serial com ports.
If you do get that, set your Baud Rate to 9600, Data Bits to 8, Parity to None and disable XON/OFF.

Also from the sounds of it, its sounding like i can't just pull up one of the terminal emulators and just connect it to the computer im using it on. I have to connect it to a router with a console cable first and then telnet into the computer im sitting at?

If router is correctly configured, you can telnett. Otherwise use console cable ad set it.
