IP SLA threshold question

hi,

I need clarifications regarding the threshold value.

Based on my understanding, lets say i chose an IP SLA path echo type.

frequency 5 = i will send pings every 5 seconds

timeout 2000 = if i dont receive a reply from the ping that I have sent within 2000 milliseconds, I will consider it a timeout.

threshold = ???

I dont get what threshold is, there are definitions on the internet but I still dont get the explanation or the usage and effect of the command.

Could somebody please explain in an easy to understand way what threshold is?

Hi Jonathan,

The threshold is to define value i.e. average RTT and if the RTT goes above threshold it can trigger traps.

The parameter "threshold" implicitly defines a threshold value for RTT.

So for instance, if you have set the router config as -

Router(config-ip-sla-tcp)#threshold 70

And if the response packet takes more time than 70msec, then if you check "ip sla summary"

Then in the "Return code", it will show as Threshold exceeded or something of that sort instead of "OK"
