OSI Model has seven Layers

  • Application Layer: It manages the program generating the data to the network. It is the (L7) of the OSI Model.
  • Presentation Layer: It determines how data is presented to the user.It is the (L6) of the OSI Model.
  • Session Layer: It provides connections between a user such as establishing, maintaining and terminating the sessions. It deals with the sessions between the Applications. It is the (L5) of the OSI Model.
  • Transport Layer: It is responsible for end to end transportation of Data between the Applications. It is the (L4) of the OSI Model. PDU For Transport Layer is Segments. The major functions described at the Transport Layer are
  1. Identifying Service
  2. Multiplexing and De-Multiplexing
  3. Segmentation
  4. Sequencing
  5. Error Correction
  6. Flow Control
  • Network Layer: It is responsible for end-to-end Transportation of data across Multiple Networks. Logical Addressing and Path Determination(Routing) are described at this layer. It is the (L3) of the OSI Model.PDU For Network Layer is Packets.
  • Data Link Layer: It is to establish a reliable protocol interface across the physical layer on behalf of the Network Layer. This layer performs error-detection and even error-correction. PDU For Data Link Layer is Frames. It is the (L2) of the OSI Model.
  • Physical Layer: It deals with the Physical transmission of Binary Data on the given Media. It deals with Electrical,Mechanical and functional Specifications of the Device Media. It is the (L1) of the OSI Model
