Pinging public IP addresses

Hi All,

 

We have purchased an Cisco asa 5512-x with IPS.  I am trying to configure a very basic setup to start testing.  I have noticed some odd behavior and am wondering if anyone can shed any light on this?

Here is our setup so far:

 

Outside IP 62.x.x.32

Management 192.168.1.62

Static route setup as follows:

Gateway of last resort is 62.x.x.2 to network 0.0.0.0

C    192.168.1.0 255.255.255.0 is directly connected, management
C    62.x.x.0 255.255.255.128 is directly connected, outside
S*   0.0.0.0 0.0.0.0 [1/0] via 62.x.x.2, outside

 

Now, I couldn't ping any addresses on the internet, until I pinged the gateway.  After a few minutes, I can no longer ping an address on the internet, until I ping the gateway again.  I have repeated this ~ 10 times, so I don't think its a coincidence.  Can anyone explain whats happening here?

Just to add:

 

I have just cleared the ARP cache, whilst running a constant ping to an IP address on the internet.  When I cleared the cache the ICMP replies came in OK, but then stopped again.
