A proxy server acts as a gateway between your organisation users  and the internet. It’s an intermediary server separating end users from the websites they browse. Proxy servers provide varying levels of functionality, security, and privacy depending on your use case, needs, or company policy.

You can do many more things like content filter, site blocking, which based on categorised.

Proxy intercept the user traffic and analyses and based on the company policies block or allow.

it also allow organisation to monitor for the user visibility accessing the internet.

you have more control on the user access content.

A proxy is a device that acts on behalf of another. They are not limited to only being used with the Internet. One of the most common proxy types used with the Internet are web proxies.

When using a web proxy, rather than your client directly communicating with a web server, your client may actually be in communication with the web proxy which in turn is in communication with the web server.

Internet web proxies usually are used to improve security (as they dissect traffic passing through them). Internet web proxies may boost performance, such as by caching previously seen content. BTW, some web proxies can dissect https traffic assuming web client isn't using a cert.

How any proxy actually functions, and what it does, can vary quite a bit even for same "kind" of proxies.
