Hey hi,

We are looking to replace the 2960s and 2950 switches, which would be the best replacement?

I wouldn´t say the best but the only option is 9200/9300 switches models, for Enterprise running IOS.

You can take a look in small business line with Catalyst 1300.

If you are looking to keep the same general features of 2950/2960 switches, I would say a good option is the Catalyst 1200 series.

Updated hardware gives you some important improvements like Gigabit ports, 10 G uplinks for some models, POE, improved performance and many more.

For more info see the following link: https://www.cisco.com/c/en/us/products/collateral/switches/catalyst-1200-series-switches/nb-06-cat1200-ser-data-sheet-cte-en.html

Unfortunately, none.

1200/1300 is an re-numbered SMB/CBS450 promoted to "Catalyst" and it runs on a hybrid Linux Cisco-IOS-like CLI.

Catalyst 9200/9300 is way overkill for a plain layer 2 Catalyst 2950/2960.

If the Cisco did not announce the EoS/EoL of the Catalyst 1000, it would have been ideal (if not perfect) replacement for the 2950/2960.

Depends on your (or Cisco's) criteria for "best".

Possibly, depending on your needs, the CBS350 series might be considered too.  (I did a quick look for EoL announcements, didn't find any.)

Personally, I'm wondering, if Cisco is working toward both marketing only more expensive devices and/or some form of additional subscription lock in.

Both.

And it is called "vendor lock-in" and subscription.

The best replacement for Cisco 2960s and 2950 switches would be the Cisco Catalyst 9200 Series. These switches offer enhanced performance, advanced security features, and support for modern network technologies like SD-Access and programmability. They are reliable, cost-effective, and suitable for most enterprise access layer needs.
