Router cannot ping across directly connected subnets w/ host static route

Hello,

I have a topology consisting of 3 routers like the ones shown in the image below. There is MINIMAL configuration on these devices.

R1:

int g0/0

 ip address 71.46.94.1 255.255.255.252

 no shutdown

ip route 71.46.94.6 255.255.255.255 71.46.94.2

R2:

int g0/0

 ip address 71.46.94.2 255.255.255.252

 no shutdown

int g0/1

 ip address 71.46.94.5 255.255.255.252

 no shutdown

R3:

int g0/1

 ip address 71.46.94.6 255.255.255.252

 no shutdown

ip route 71.46.94.1 255.255.255.255 71.46.94.5

It is my thought that when I run the command R1#ping 71.46.94.6 source int g0/0 that I should be able to connect end to end. My reasoning is this: R1 has a static route installed for 71.46.94.6 forcing the next hop to be 71.46.94.2 (its connected interface to R2), R2 is directly connected to both /30 networks, and R3 has a static route pointing the return traffic for 71.46.94.1 to its next hop of 71.46.94.5 (its connected interface to R2).

Can someone please explain why this is incorrect thinking? If I install a default route on each router pointing to its R2 connected interface, things work no problem. If I install a static route to 71.46.94.0/24 as a "summary" pointing to its R2 connect interface again, things work no problem. For some reason I am not understanding why this static route pointed directly to the single host is not working.

Hi Greg & Jaderson,

I've done this now in both VIRL and GNS3 both using IOSv images, and of course, just like taking a car to the mechanic shop, as soon as I go to configure the devices again and take screenshots to send to you, it starts working... I don't know how I managed to have a type (I guess that's what I have to assume, or a bug in that specific simulation) on both platforms, but somehow I did over the course of like four hours of troubleshooting and many many different tests...

Thanks for confirming this should work, it's a relief to know I'm not going completely crazy :D

Great, good lucky in your studies guy.

If possible, mark as helpfu the answers.

thanks in advance

Dear ryanulr,
Its working normally here, your configurations is correct... Maybe its a bug your packet tracert or gns3, try do it again.
