RPS 675

hello, I am not sure if this is the correct forum for this question but I cannot see where else I would put it!

My question relates to the use of the RPS 675 device. I have connected a switch to it (3750) and have set the RPS to active for the port. When I disconnect the mains power supply from the switch it continues to work but the RPS blinks amber for that port. When I reconnect the AC supply to the switch the port remains amber on the RPS and the RPS LED on the switch blinks amber. In order to restore the mains power to the switch I have to hit the standby/active button on the RPS which causes the switch to reboot! This is not good as I would have to get an outage for all connected devices in order to restore AC power to the the switch. Is this the way it operates and or is there a way to do this without causing a reboot?

Incidentally I connected the RPS to a 2811 router and it did not reboot when I followed the same steps. I tried with a 3500XL switch and the switch rebooted leading me to believe that the condition is switch specific.

Thanks

Donagh

Hi Donagh,

RPS 675 is a redundent power suply and its not the same as the UPS. UPS falls back on the mains line when it get the AC power but same is not the casme with RPS 675. In order the get the switch back to the AC power you have to reboot the switch while you have your RPS connected to the switch.

I am not sure about the router as I have not used it on my routers. But yes on the switches you have to reboot the switches to get back to the AC main.

Please see the compatibility Matrix for RPS 675, routers are not suppoerted.

HTH,

Thanks for your reply amit.

I am not trying to replace a UPS but I am simply trying to give my devices dual power. If the power source on my switch fails then I want the RPS to keep it up. It does not make any sense that when the mains power is restored to the switch that I have to reboot the switch to reactivate the mains power. Crazy dont you think?

I do agree with you....errr a bit crazy..

But that's the way it works and you have to reboot your switch to get back to the main supply.

Unless you use the 3750G or 3750 POE models...they don't reboot.
