Hi
I'm preparing myself for CCENT exam.
I'm trying to build a simple home lab. I've bought 2 1721 routers both with WIC 1T cards.
Today I was trying to connect them back to back using DTE/DCE cable.
At some point I've realised that I can't turn interface state to up using ''no shutdown'' command.
After I type it interface stays ''down'' and message appears - ''interface serial 0 changed state to down''
I have no idea whats going on - it happens on both routers with either cable pluged or unpluged.
I'll appreciate any advice on what to do with this issue.
Thanks a lot in advance

Most likely you are missing this command: clock rate
To configure the clock rate for the hardware connections on serial interfaces such as network interface modules (NIMs) and interface processors to an acceptable bit rate, use the clock rate command in interface configuration mode. To remove the clock rate if you change the interface from a DCE to a DTE device, use the no form of this command. Using the no form of this command on a DCE interface sets the clock rate to the hardware-dependent default value.
clock rate bps
no clock rate

Take care to configure it on the DCE-side.

Hi
Thanks for the advice. I'm going to try it tomorrow - i'm going to bed now ;]
I thought that you have to set clock rate only if you want your router to act as ISP sort of thing.
OK. I'll let you know if that was the case.
Thx.
