I have a Cisco2801, two serials configured as a frame-relay switch.
On serial 0/2/0, there's an 805 attached with a back-to-back cable.
On serial 0/2/1 there's a 2612 also with a back-to-back cable.
The 2612 circuit comes up fine.
On the 805 however, I get the SPEED EXCEEDS 512K INTERFACE SHUTDOWN message.
I wonder how I can make the 2801 serial interface behave as a 512K....
Weird thing is I'm able to get an HDLC link with no complains from the 805, but not a frame-relay one.
Any comments will be appreciated.
Thank you.
Charles.

I am not sure at this point why you have the problem when configuring the interface as Frame Relay and not a problem when configuring the interface as HDLC. Perhaps if you post the router configs we might notice something that would lead us to an answer.

Check to see that the 2801 has the DCE-end of the back-to-back cable, that the interface is set for DCE (show controller, ~top three lines, intf-type DCE), and that the clock-rate is set for the correct value.
Perhaps you have the cable reversed, and the 2600 is actually setting the clock rate (back to back cable have a DCE end and a DTE end).
Good Luck
