The 1700 series traditionally uses a class B filesystem, but now the 1700 Series Router
utilizes commands from class B filesystems as well as commands from class C filesystems.
In order to activate the class C filesystem commands on the, you first need to use the
erase command to completely remove all files from the Flash filesystem. Then, when the
Flash is empty, run the squeeze command against it to create a squeeze log. At this point,
the 1700 Flash system uses the delete and squeeze commands like a class C filesystem.

Let me know how it goes.

What kind of router is this ? There is a note in this link that the first time you use the flash file system, you have to erase the flash completely and then squeeze so that it creates a squeeze log. After that you will be able to use the delete and squeeze in the IOS.
Its possible that your flash was never formated and squeezed.
Note that while you do this procedure, if you lose power to the router, you will have a broken router stuck in rommon. I would advise you upload your image (in flash) to a TFTp server and then perform the format of the flash.

Hello,
I have noticed that if I erase all and reload a previous IOS then upgrade back again - I receive the same prompt to erase the flash:
R2-1720A#delete running-config
Delete filename [running-config]?
Delete flash:running-config? [confirm]
R2-1720A#squeeze flash:
Squeeze operation may take a while. Continue? [confirm]
first create squeeze log by erasing the entire device
%Error squeezing flash (No such file or directory)
R2-1720A#
So if you have to remove the files - be able to copy your IOS back to flash:.
Hope this helps.

James

I think the guidane which u people have provided will resolve the issue . To do this I need to take the down time..
Also, I have noticed one more command
squeeze /nolog flash:
which will remove all files in flash. After this I need to upload IOS.
