Suggestion on Cisco routing device

Joseph E Spoon

Hello. I am looking for a suggestion on a Cisco routing device that meets the following criteria. The goal is to have it setup in a redundant configuration with the same model router. I appreciate any suggestions.

  • at least 10Gbps or 25Gbps of throughput (25Gbps preferred)
  • can support at least 2 external ISPs via eBGP but preferably expandable to up to 4 external ISPs
  • can support at least 2 internal physical connections to the internal network
  • not near EOL

Some models that I've found so far that seem to fit the criteria are:

  • Cisco Catalyst C8500L-8S4X
  • ASR1001-X
  • ASR9001

If anyone has any experience working with one of the routing devices above or has any suggestions, I am open to it.

Stick with Catalyst 8500.

Great, thank you for the suggestion!

Leo,

Looks like it is but confirming that BGP is supported on the Catalyst 8500 switch / IOS XE software (https://www.cisco.com/c/en/us/td/docs/routers/ios/config/17-x/ip-routing/b-ip-routing/m_irg-bgp-pol-acct.html). Haven't had to chance to implement one of these yet.

Thanks,

Joe Spoon

The Catalyst 8500 is a router and can do BGP routing, HOWEVER, I must caution to be "smart" (aka frugal) about the memory purchased.

Nobody has ever got "burnt" for buying this router and then putting maximum memory.
