Hi we have a requirement to upgrade a Cisco ASR1001-X router from version IOS15.5(3)S5 IOS XE 03.16.05 to asr1001x-universalk9.17.06.04.SPA.bin
Can we upgrade directly to this version or will be have to implement an intermediate version in-between the two?

Hello @phil.g.james,
check your ROMMON version and see if an upgrade of it is necessary

Direct upgrade is supported as long as the ROMMON is upgraded first.

Bundle Mode upgrade, from 16.9.X, to 17.9.X is supported as long as the ROMMON gets upgraded first.
NOTE:
Some people may state that the ROMMON will get "automatically" upgraded, I would not risk it because I've already seen in 17.12.X where the ROMMON did not get "automatically" upgraded to 17.7.1r and the router went into a boot-crash-loop as a consequence of this "undocumented feature".

Use Install Mode instead.

Hi @Leo Laohoo ,
Can we upgrade directly from bundle mode to install mode by simply following the install mode upgrade steps, or is there a specific method we need to follow?

Follow the guide I have posted to upgrade from Bundle Mode to Install Mode.
NOTE:
Do not conduct a direct upgrade from 17.3.X (and earlier) to 17.12.X (and later) because the router may go into a boot-crash-loop. Upgrade first to an intermediate version, like 17.6.X or 17.9.X, before making the upgrading to 17.12.X (and later).
