Verifying asymmetric routing in the network

Hello Everyone,

In our network the CE router is connected via two links to core switch. I have to verify for asymmetric routing.

Someone suggested me to run:

sh ip bgp neighbors <ip address> received-routes
sh ip bgp neighbors <ip address> advertised-routes

on both core switch and CE router and check if advertised routes and received routes are same.

Is there a better way to verify asymmetric routing ?

Thanks.

can you do a traceroute to or from the CE router

Thanks prajithtr2

There are several ways to detect the problem:

1) trace route

2) Extended ping with record route option

3) Capturing Tool

Thanks Kasim for the suggestions. Can you throw some light on capturing tools.

Hello.

There is no way to check asymmetric routing, unless you are continuously looking into traffic flows (because at the moment it might be symmetric, but in a day everything could be changed).

But your design might guarantee that no asymmetric routing is possible.

Could you share your routing protocol settings you are using? And what asymmetry (please provide an example) is undesirable and why?
