Hi,
I am configuring WAN failover between two of our offices. The router model, license and version is given below:
1841 - IPBASEK9 - 12.4
2821 - IPBASE - 12.4
I have FA0/0 as Primary and S0/0 as Secondary.
When FA0/0 fails the link does not switch to S0/0 as the FA interface is UP even when link fails.
Please let me know how to configure failover in this case.
Thanks
Dev

Are you using the backup interface feature? How are your devices connected? Could you provide a diagram? Why does the link not fail? Is there a converter involved? You could also look into IP SLA if your software supports it.

This is a inter office (point to point) connectivity.
The ethernet interface does not go down as there will be switch / converter. The link only goes down.
Since the interface is up the link will not fall back to secondary/backup link (s0/0).
IP SLA cannot be used as the software is IP Base.

If you cannot use IP SLA then the other way is to run a routing protocol between the 2 sites. If the fa0/0 link fails it will stop receiving routes even if the interface remains up and so the s0/0 interface would be used. You would have to influence the metrics of the routes received so that the fa0/0 routes had the better metric than the s0/0 routes.

Assuming that your both links are terminated on same router, You can use the IP SLA feature to resolve your issue. Using which you can track the the object, and do config in a way that route will be flushed from routing table if object goes down..
If you require further help then pls mention which type of routing you are using i.e. static or dynamic ..
