Not all parts of the world provide for all WAN technologies, and what's common, or available, can vary much depending exactly where you are.

Not that I'm aware, although what's often the case is newer technologies come along, that use existing media, but can push data faster across the media. Especially for WAN, where replacing media if very, very expensive.
