0-bit = match

1-bit = ignore

'Don't care bits' are represented by binary 1's whilst the 'Do care bits' are represented by binary 0's. The exact opposite of the subnet mask. Taking 192.168.1.32/27 as an example. Subnet mask - 255.255.255.224

4th octet in decimal

32

4th octet in binary

0 0 1 0 0 0 0 0

4th octet mask in decimal

224

4th octet mask in binary

1 1 1 0 0 0 0 0

Now the 4th octet wildcard in binary

0 0 0 1 1 1 1 1

Now the 4th octet wildcard in decimal

31

   255.255.255.255Wildcard mask -  0.0.0.31

- 255.255.255.224

-------------------

       0.    0.    0.  31
