change license usage in nexus1000v

Hi,

our server-team has established many new esx-server, without announcing us about this.

So we are using overdraft licenses.

After turning off older ESX-server we set free 2 licenses into the pool with this

svs license transfer src-vem  vem no  license_pool

now i'm expecting that free licenses are used by existing server which are using overdraft licenses.But there are already used overdraft ones while there are new free ones.

here is the output for :

Are module 15 and 16 in use?

If yes, we can transfer their licenses back and make them pull permanent licenses again relinquishing the overdraft.

Modules 15 and 16 are not in use. i ve transfer this licenses back with:

On the VSM can you do a "no vem 15-16". This should clean up the old UUID records.

As for getting your VEMs to swap their overdraft for permanent, there's no easy way I know of (still investigating).  I'm not aware of a way to identify which VEM is using an overdraft vs. permanent license.  We would need to remove the VEM from the VSM and re-add it to force the permanent license to be pulled instead of the sticky.  This could prove a pain because we don't know which VEMs are the issue, and you have 25 modules.   Removing & Re-adding each one would take some time as youi'd have to evacuate VMs etc.

There's no problem using overdraft licenses.  They are fully featured and never expire.  They are no different than the permanent licenses.  In the meantime I'll see if I can find another way to identify the affected VEMs with overdraft licenses.

Just as an FYI - which version are you running?  From version 2.1 onward the licenses are only required for the Advanced version (which enables DHCPS, DARP Inspection, IPSG, and TrustSec), all basic features are now "free".  If you're not using any of the advanced features, you may want to consider upgrading and never having to worry about licenses again.

If you have purchased permanent licenses, you have the option to upgrade them to Advanced licenses for 2.1 onwards for free - and this comes with the VSG (Virtual Security Gateway).
