Cisco C220 M4 - RAID 5

XTREAM_UK

Evening All

I am looking for some assistance.....

I recently got pre-owned C220 from eBay. I also manged to order a Cisco 12G Modular SAS controller with 1GB cache module and battery.

CIMC is showing everything is present:

HBA.PNG

However it will not allow me to use RAID 5 / 6.

Cap.PNG

I have looked at previous posts and on the controller itself, the options for RAID 5 / 6 are missing:

Any assistance with this would be greatly appreciated!

Greetings.

Despite showing the cache module present, it seems like your raid options match what would be the available options if the cache module wasn't installed.

The CIMC, storage view, should show you what the state of the SuperCAP charge  and related health settings are.

I would also make sure it has latest available firmware to make sure the 12Gb raid card and the cache/Supercap play nice together.

Kirk...

Hi Kirk

Thanks for taking the time to reply.

The firmware is fully up to date as of yesterday. I’ll try and get a screenshot of the BBU health if needed however it’s all showing as good.

I have been in touch with the supplier of the RAID card and they have advised I need a Key to enable RAID 5. I cannot see this listed anywhere within the documentation other than when using software RAID which I am not using.

Any other thoughts?

That 'key' only applies to the onboard ICH controller, and not the actual SAS raid controller you have.

This issue seems to revolve around the controller acknowledging it's got a valid cache and supercap module.

I recall, working with one of the these controllers in the Lab, and when pulling the cache module off (failed), and replacing it with another, the card got stuck in some mode where it wouldn't use the cache.

This may require a techsupport after 1st triggering the controller TTY logs, to see what the megaraid firmware level logging shows...

In that Cntrl + R option rom menu, you might try doing a factory default reset on the card, if you haven't already.

Kirk...

Hi Kirk

Again, thanks for your reply.

I have already performed a factory reset of the controller card.

The BBU is showing:

Happy to try anything else?

Thanks

Based on everything I am reading here, you either do not have the FBWC installed or it has failed.

Can you send a picture of the controller with the cache module installed? Can you attempt to remove and reseat the cache module from the controller? It sits right on top of it.

Hi Wes

Thanks for your reply. The Cache module has been re-seated previous and I have done this again.

Please see below:
03.jpg02.jpg01.jpg

Are you able to get a replacement cache module and test?

If you install the card without the cache, does the CIMC report anything different? If not, I suspect the cache module is not being detected, leading to RAID 5 not being available.
