I have the following setup:
Ring1---R1--FW---R2--R3--R4----Ethernet1
- There's a AS/400 on Token Ring network connected to R1
- There's a AS/400 on the Ethernet segment connected to R4
- R1 is a 7200 router, with both ethernet and TR interfaces
- R2, R3 and R4 are 3662 routers, all ethernet interfaces
- R3 and R4 run IOS Enterprise w/ FW and 3DES (no FW config, no crypto in config)
- Between R1 and R2 is a cloud unknown to me, on my client's side
- R2 and R3 are back to back with a crossover cable
- R3 and R4 are connected with a Lan Extension link
- There's a unknown firewall somewhere in the cloud between R1 and R2
We've been successful connecting R1 and R4 as DLSw+ peers, and the two AS/400 servers did connect to each other. (NICs using their 'normal' MAC, and the connection made using the 'bitswapped' MAC of the other as destination). But the client is reporting poor performance on data transfers.
What are my options?
Someone suggested defining the peers with 'rif-passthru', but we haven't been able to establish connections so far. My questions:
1. Can 'rif-passthru' be used when one end point is ethernet?
2. If so, would it have an effect on performance?
3. Are there any settings I could play with that could affect performance?
4. Would adding a TR interface to R4 and connecting the AS/400 to it give us better performance?
5. In the case of adding a TR interface, would switching the encapsulation to FST make a big difference?
6. In the case of adding a TR interface, would using RSRB make a difference?
Or could it be that I'm just having way too many hops to go thru and SNA is delay sensitive enough to be showing problems?
Basically I have limited experience with TR, SNA and DLSw+, but have to make this work asap for a client.

I think the following steps you should to take :
1. check whether the IP delay time is long between R1 and R4.
2. your choice 4 is a good choice.
3. rif passthru is not a good choice for this case.
4. TCP is enough, no need FST.
