N1000v 4.2(1)SV2(1.1) Memory status alert

One of our customers see a lot of these in the active VSM.

Both Primary and secondary are installed as VMs on ESXi 5.1.0 Releasebuild-799733

%PLATFORM-2-MEMORY_ALERT: Memory Status Alert : MINOR ALERT RECOVERED

%PLATFORM-2-MEMORY_ALERT: Memory Status Alert : MINOR

The timeframe between "RECOVERT" until the alarm is set again are usually just a few seconds hence the status is usually alert if one go by the logs.

Repeating the command "show system internal memory-status " also gives me the the status

"MemStatus: Minor Alert "

Passive one looks OK

From the active VSM again

vsm01# show system resources

Load average:   1 minute: 0.18   5 minutes: 0.09   15 minutes: 0.07

Processes   :   287 total, 1 running

CPU states  :   0.0% user,   1.0% kernel,   99.0% idle

Memory usage:   2075740K total,   1817172K used,    258568K free

                 104604K buffers, 1065164K cache

I'm not going to throw in the complete output from "show process mem" to start with but the total process mem allocation is

All processes: MemAlloc = 414822400

This I guess is in bytes as usual for Cisco so it only counts for 414MB och the 1,7GB used.

The system message guide for NX-OS only explination is to contact TAC.

Switchover will free up the memory.  Fixed in SV2(2.1) and later.

Bad title but this is the defect.

I have opened a TAC case for this. We are working on the problem.

We have the same problem with

nexus-1000v 4.2(1)SV2(1.1a)

So far all we know is that it could be related to the disk for the VSM is thin provisioned.
I will update after we have had the oportunity to fix this.

Hello sokarlsson,

I spoke with the TAC engineers about this case.   #1 Although the VSM should be thick provisioned this is not the cause of the memory alarms.  #2 We found that /var/sysmgr was full.  This can be seen with 'sh sys internal flash' command.

We would like to further investigate which file(s) are over utilizing the file system.  The TAC engineer will reach out to you shortly to take a non-invasive look.  Please do not reboot or switchover.

Michael - Please take a look at the 'sh sys internal flash' to see if your /var/sysmgr is also full.  If not, please send me a private message with a 'sh tech svs' or open a TAC SR & send me the number.

Hi Matthew

Like you said, you were right.

Nexus1000V# sh sys internal flash

Mount-on                  1K-blocks      Used   Available   Use%  Filesystem

/var/sysmgr                  512000    507848        4152    100   none

/var/sysmgr/ftp              204800        40      204760      1   none

I have the same issue. How was this solved?

/var/sysmgr                 512000   512000          0   100   none
