SRB over serial interface

For Cisco routers, does RSRB the way to have SRB over serial interface? (not Frame relay, just WAN connection connected by NTU)

For RSRB, both ends of the WAN link have to encapsulate SRB frames in either:

1. TCP/IP

2. FST

3. HDLC

If we want to have direct encapsulation, HDLC is the only choice. However, if one end of the WAN link does not support HDLC (old non-Cisco routers), then we cannot have SRB over the serial interface?

You are quite correct. To pass SRB traffic accross a serial connection either requires encapsulation in TCP/IP or direct encapsulation using HDLC.

If your other routers are non Cisco, they will not support RSRB in any form, since it is Cisco proprietory and the recommendation now is to use the DLSW non proprietory standard which replaced RSRB.
