Objective
Many modern switches function at layer 3 and have logical interfaces to perform this function. These Layer 3 interfaces provide hosts with physical routing interfaces to the SFE/SGE Managed Switches. If the administrator wants to perform features such as IP Static Routing or UDP Relay, the switch must be converted to Layer 3. The purpose of this document is to explain how to convert the SFE/SGE Managed Switches from layer 2 to layer 3 via Putty.
Applicable Devices
• SFE/SGE Managed Switches
Software Version
• v3.0.0.18 [SFE/SGE Managed Switches]
• v0.62 [Putty]
Convert Switch from Layer 2 to Layer 3
Note: Putty is a free open source terminal that acts as a client for protocols such as SSH, Telnet, Raw and Rlogin. Download the latest version of putty here.
Step 1. Connect the SFE/SGE switch to an administrator computer and launch Putty.
Step 2. Choose Session in the navigation tree.
Step 3. Enter the IP address assigned to the device in the Host Name (or IP address) field.
Step 4. Click the Telnet radio button from the Connection type field. This identifies the type of connection the administrator wants to assign authentication.
Step 5. Click the Open button. The Login Screen appears:
Step 6. Enter the user name to access the device in the User Name field. The default username is admin.
Step 7. Use the Down navigation key to enter the password to access the device in the Password field. The default password is admin.
Step 8. Use the Up/Down navigation keys to scroll down to the System Mode and press Enter.
Step 9. Use the Right/Left navigation keys to move to Edit in the Action field and press Enter.
Step 10. The administrator is directed to System Mode after Reset field. Use Space bar to change the system Mode to Layer 3.
Step 11. Press the ESC button to go back to the Action field. Use the Right/Left navigation keys to move to Save in the Action field and press Enter.
Step 12. The administrator is asked to reset the device. Enter Y to reset the device.
Caution: When the device is reset, it takes a while for the device to restart. The network is disrupted for that amount of time.
Step 13. Log in to the web configuration utility and the administrator is directed to the System Management page. The GUI shows new features such as UDP Relay and Routing that can only be used when the switch is in Layer 3 mode.
