Hi.
Trying to get Fabric Manager 5.0.7 installed on a Windows Server 2008 R2 box.
I've installed an old version of Java to keep it happy (6u38) but when I try to run the install it pops up with the'Cisco Management Software' box showing 'Loading, please wait' but then it just disappears and nothing else happens.
If I try to click the link 'Launch Cisco Fabric Manager Installer' from the CD then it does nothing but pops up a message in the bottom left of IE which, when expanded, says 'Automation server can't create object'.
I've tried starting the secondary logon service, I've tried turning off the Windows firewall, I've manually added the Java bin folder to the system path, I've uninstalled AV from the box and so on - I've run out of ideas.
Any suggestions?!

Hi Tim,
If using remote desktop to access the server, make sure you are in console mode:
mstsc /console
When you log in, make sure you use a userid that is a LOCAL admin on the box and not just a member of the network admin group.
Best regards,
Jim

Thanks Jim, no joy though I'm afraid.
I've also tried running the FM 4.2.9 install with the same symptoms which makes me think it might be a Java problem.

Hi Tim,
It could be but it is almost always a security/autorization issue.
Turn off UAC and check the logs under Computer Management to see if there is a log there that might provide more information.
Best regards,
Jim

I had disabled UAC already (because I hate it, as much as for any other reason!) but as it happens it looks like I've resolved the problem - Java.
Despite the version I originally installed being validated on the release notes along with a few others that I tried, I eventually resorted to an even older archived version (1.5.x) and it worked...
I don't like running such an outdated bit of software though (especially Java), might see if I can get away with upgrading it now that the software is installed.
Thanks for your suggestions anyway, Jim, much appreciated.

Tim,
Any luck with your upgrade? My FM installs which were running fine are now not working properly with the JRE1.7.0_15 update. I do not want to run such an old version of Java either.
Cisco, any planned FM support for a less vulnerable version of Java? I cannot find a version which works with the latest Java releases. Other suggestions appreciated.

Hi Brian,
Just a thought, I had a problem where I only had a 64 bit version of Java installed. Can you download and install a 32 bit version at JRE1.7.0_15 and try again.
Best regards,
Jim

Thanks for the suggestion Jim. I am running the 32-bit version of JRE1.7.0_15 but with no success. I am receive an unsupported error. I tried FM5.0.4d and FM4.2.9.
I reloaded Java 6 and am back to a good spot with FM.

One sentence that caught my attention:
The February release is the last public release of Java 6 and available for a limited time. The February release is the last public release of Java 6 and available for a limited time.
Please pass this along, I'll keep an eye for an update.
Thanks,
Brian

Hi Brian,
Fabric Manager has migrated to DCNM.
DCNM is available on Cisco Online also.
To make use of the security fixes in future versions of Java 1.7 and above, you will need to migrate to DCNM.
http://www.cisco.com/en/US/products/ps10495/index.html
Note This Important Change
As of NX-OS 5.2, Cisco Fabric Manager and FMS will be known as Cisco Data Center Network Manager for SAN, and the LAN-focused Data Center Network Manager will become Data Center Network Manager for LAN. Data Center Network Manager now refers to the converged product.
All features of Cisco Fabric Manager and FMS are preserved in this new converged product. Customers with existing FMS licenses can transparently upgrade and keep all their existing licenses.
With DCNM-SAN 5.2 you can still install the Stand Alone SAN version.
With the DCNM 6.x version, DCNM-SAN and DCNM-LAN are integrated and the product only comes in the Server version.
Best regards,
Jim

Thanks Jim, apologies for my delayed response. I have been looking at DCNM but is 6.1(2) the latest? That is what I see online. Java 6 is actually part of the DCNM install package and that is what my DCNM is running on.
Thank you for your assistance, much appreciated.

Hi Brian,
Yes, that is correct, Prime DCNM 6.1(2) is the latest available.
Yes, that is correct. It comes with Java 1.6.
Best regards,
Jim
