SG300-24P boot loop after update to firmware 1.4.7.5

Hi, first time in this forum and asking for help.

I own a SG300-24p running my intelligent home. First I rebooted the switch to have a clean and running system (was OK), than I updated to FW 1.4.7.5 from 1.4.1.03. Download went fine (I did other switches upgrade two times without any problem). After selecting the new downloaded image as active image, I rebooted the switch. After that the switch is hanging in a boot loop. I tried to go to factory settings (by doing 30-30-30), but nothings changes. Than I connected to console an I see a config failure while booting. The switch should not have hardware issues, because it run since 1 year without any problem. After that I tried to downgrade to the old firmware 1.4.1.03 via upload over terminal through the console. Download went also fine, but I'm stuck in the same boot loop again.

Any help appreciated!

Michel

Attached the actual out´put from the console.

Hello Michel

I've had the same problem as you for the last 3 weeks and I have had 4 SG300-10's do the same thing.  I have just managed to clear the setup and get them to boot up again successfully.

Using the console, at the initial boot enter the prom menu and select option (2) clear flash memory. I tried all sorts of filenames but this morning I entered

config

and it worked. The switched regenerated new keys and i was able to login again.

This method does wipe your configuration and reloading my backup config created the boot-loop again but hey, just delete the flash file "config" and have another go!

Hope this works for you.

Chris

Hello Chris,

thanks for trying to help. It doesn't work out for me. I still have the boot loop around.

Hello,

My name is Jonathan and I am one of the Engineers here at Cisco Small Business.

I apologize for the delay in answering and for any inconvenience with the unit, it seems odd that the unit has this behavior after the upgrade and downgrade.

-can you let us know if the boot code was upgrade as well or just the firmware version

-as the the unit is on a loop i recommend to call us back to open a ticket in case you haven't, as you stated the unit keeps failing after a factory reset.

-as well what is the status of the lights on the unit, do you see amber on the system light or green?

Thanks.

Hello Jonathan,

good to hear from Cisco, was on the way returning the unit. To your questions:

Update was only firmware, no change of the boot code. As I recognized there was an actual one in, which supports the new firmware, I left it unchanged. The update was done over the web frontend. Download was successful (as long as the web screen told). Last step was to change the actual active image (from 1 to 2 as it was on that unit the first firmware update) and rebooted. Then the problem started.

The downgrade was done over serial console.

The lights show blinking green an the second (lower) one. Never seen an amber light. What makes me a little bit thinking is while booting (before the unit goes into reset) only the right 8 port lights and the 4 additional ports will light shortly on, the left 16 will stay unlighted.

The unit was mounted in a network rack during update process, there was no power failure or something else special happening in the setup.

Actually the unit doesn't finish an firmware update over console modem download, it still resets.

The error codes I reported from the console should direct you hopefully in the right direction.

If you have further questions, please ask.

Thanks,

Michel

Hi Jonathan,

is there anything new ? I didn't got any feedback, so I was wondering if there were some questions to the switch open to be able to help. Please let me know if you are still on the case.

Many thanks

Michel

Hello Michael,

I apologize for the delay in the response, if you still need assistance, i strongly recommend to call us and open a case, i want to mention that this is not an official case, but a forum post, so we might not be able to answer you as soon as you need it, to help you in a better way.

From what you stated the factory reset is not working and some of the ports are not lighting up when you performed it, this may be related to a hardware problem or it might be something on the network causing the issue.

Hello Jonathan

The boot code was not upgraded as I believe it is the latest version (v1.3.5.06).

I watched the power light many, many times over the numerous reboots and it did not flash amber (it flashes twice on my backup working unit on startup).

Just to clarify a statement in your reply, the unit does not keep failing after a factory reset... it does not perform a factory reset, it simply reboots back into the loop.

Kind regards

Chris
