Hi everyone
I need some advice on a switch which can provide the following:
1) ipv4 and ipv6 L3 routing in hardware (+HSRP)
2) 10G connectivity to servers (~5 metres away)
3) 10G connectivity to other switches (~1 metre away)
3) 2x1G connectivity to other switches (~2 metre away)
Cost is a serious constraint, so I'm limited to 4900M/3560E switches.
4900M questions:
1) Since the built-in 10G interfaces don't support the twingig modules, is it possible to connect to other 1gbit switches other than by using up a half-card slot?
2) We would like to use the 10GBase-T half card and connect to the servers using RJ45+CAT6 - what is the performance penalty compared to direct attach (twinax+SFP)?
3560E questions:
1) We'd like to use "10GBASE-CU SFP+ Cable 7 Meter, active" + Cisco OneX Converter Module to connect servers to switches. http://www.cisco.com/en/US/docs/switches/lan/catalyst3750e_3560e/hardware/install/notes/1757202.html does not mention the active cables, only passive up to 5M - why is this?
2) We are connecting to HP servers - I've heard reports that HP NICs don't like other manufacturers' SFP+ connections, so we are considering HP SFP+ direct attach cable. Will Cisco switches accept such a cable (i.e. not Cisco manufactured)?
Any suggestions greatly accepted and appreciated.
Thanks
A
