Nop. If you have a network cable you could link the switch with your PC and tranfer via network.
On the switch side you need to add an ip address and your PC another ip.
switc:
int vlan 1
ip add 192.168.1.1 255.255.255.0
PC:
192.168.1.2
255.255.255.0
Install a TFTP server on the PC.Tftpd64 works just fine. Map it to the wired interface
Then, on the switch
copy tftp: flash:

I was using chrome, worked with edge, thank you and now strangely enough comes up in chrome also
one more question, the switch in question is a 48TS-L
the software link above states 48ts-s, I have somewhat limited knowledge about this, is there another version or will this release work fine?

You can return one step back on the download link and get to the 48ts-s, but the IOS is exactly the same.

I appreciate your help, I have the software downloaded to a usb thumb drive (fat32)
but I must be doing something wrong? it seems the switch does not see the usb drive even though it is lit up
switch:
switch: copy flash:c2960s-universalk9-mz.152-2a.E1.bin usb0:c2960s-universalk9-m
flash:c2960s-universalk9-mz.152-2a.E1.bin: no such file or directory
switch: z.152-2a.E1.bin
Unknown cmd: z.152-2a.E1.bin
switch:

You need to identify which driver the switch use for this USB and then use the command
copy USB: flash:

can't get it to see any usb drive, I am currently transferring it via xmodem which is going to take hours, is there a faster way?

will this IOS also work for a 2960S-poe?

You reffer to c2960s-universalk9-mz.152-2a.E1.bin?
Yes. The switch platform define PoE supporrt not the IOS.
C2960s support PoE.
