2960S and UTP SFP not supported !!

We were looking into using the 2960S as an access switch for a gigabit to the desk project replacing 2960 10/100 switches. Al our access switches are fully patched, so we need the 25th port for our uplink (uplinks are gigabit UTP). 2960S seemed the ideal way to go, except for one small but annoying thing : UTP SFP's are officially not supported on 2960S according to the release notes.

This is the official reaction we got via our supplier :

"As the data sheet mention it is not supported.

It does not mean it will not work. It means that Engineering did not test it and validate it.

It can work but we will not support it as we do not know which impact it can have on the Switch".

Anyone has more inside info or a rationale why the GLC-T was not tested or is not supported on this switch ?

We can't afford to go to the 3XXX switch line just to have a Cisco L2 switch with 24 10/100/1000 and 1 or 2 (UTP) gigabit uplinks.

Hey Wim,

GLC-T is supported on 2960S models with 1G (SFP) uplink ports. Copper SFPs are not currently supported in models with 10G (SFP+) uplink ports, support is planned for a future IOS release.

The transceiver compatibility matrix needs to be updated, but hardware installation guide is accurate - http://www.cisco.com/en/US/docs/switches/lan/catalyst2960/hardware/installation/guide_stack/HIGOVERV.html#wp1250224

Hope this helps,

/Phil

Cisco is a very, very large organization.  It is supported (based on the Cisco SE I spoke to).  Someone decided that since it's not in the docu, it won't be supported.

Hello,

May I have another question about 2960S SFP+/SFP support ?

Is it possible to put 10 Gbps SFP+ in first slot and 1 Gbps SFP in second slot ? Is it supported ?

Hey Dariusz,

Yes, the SFP+ ports support either 10G SFP+ or 1G SFPs in either port (just not the 100FX or copper SFPs at present).

Cheers,
/Phil
