2960X not providing PoE to none Cisco End Points

PAR

Hello

We have a new 2960X switch but it isn't sending power to none Cisco end point. We can connect a Cisco access point and it provides power as normal, but when I connect the door access control unit or a Mitel telephone I get the following error message: -

May 13 12:17:47.215: %ILPOWER-7-DETECT: Interface Gi1/0/1: Power Device detected: IEEE PD

May 13 12:17:48.095: %ILPOWER-5-POWER_GRANTED: Interface Gi1/0/1: Power granted

May 13 12:17:48.410: %ILPOWER-5-IEEE_DISCONNECT: Interface Gi1/0/1: PD removed

I have tried it on various ports and it appears to be the same.

This is the switch details: -

WS-C2960X-48FPD-L 15.2(4)E8 C2960X-UNIVERSALK9-M

I have connected the none Cisco end points to a Cisco 2960S and they work fine.

Is it a firmware issue?

Appreciate any advice.

Thanks

Paul.

1. could be none left , aka no power is available in terms of Watts for that device.  if other devices taken all the power, none is left for next device. check power available / remaining with show power inline command

2. check cable to that device.  from switch u can run command cable test tdr interface Gix/y

in terms of Gigabit, all 4 pairs - all 8 wires- must be correctly connected/terminated.

3. End-device Or port is failing.  try different end device on same port and/or try different port

Thanks for the response.

I'm using a patch lead direct from switch to end point and I have tried various patch leads. I use the same patch lead to connect the Cisco access point and it works fine. Also when I test with a 2960S switch I'm using the same patch lead and it works.

This is the only device connected to the switch, its currently in our test area.

Thanks

Paul.

Further update.

I have tried upgrading and downgrading firmware but still have the issue. I have also upgraded the firmware of the 2960S and the end device works fine.

I did notice the PoE LED is flashing orange.

Any advice much appreciated.

thanks.

Hello Paul,

From your description I can see that the problem is only with the other PD, cisco PD is working fine on the same switch.

Was this end device working prior to this on the problematic switch?

From the provided logs I could not find much.

Could you please try to provide the static power to the port where you are connecting your non-working PD.

switch (config)#interface <interface id>

switch (config-if)#power inline port 2x-mode

switch (config-if)#shut

switch (config-if)#no shut

Before executing the above command enable the below debugs on the switch so that we will be able to find the root cause in the logs.

debugs ilpower port

debug ilpower powerman

debug ilpower controller

Also, try to change the port on the same switch and then check, these steps you need to follow in order to isolate the issue. If the same switch is able to provide the power to the Cisco PD then there might be some other problem.

Regards,

Priyanka

Thank you for your reply Priyanka

This a new door access control unit and a new switch, but I have tried on another 2960X and it still doesn't work, but does work on the 2960S switch. I have also tried other door access control units and I get the same results.

I have applied the command you mentioned and this is the debug output.

Hello Paul,

Here we need to first understand the class which the nonworking PD is supporting. If it is working on one 2900S and not on 2900-X then there might be the platform-specific and the device compatibility issue.

What I see wrong is the detection of the equipment, since it says that it is a "PD 3 class 7 device" connected in the interface
May 15 08:33:25.095: Ilpower PD device 3 class 7 from interface (Gi1/0/1)

The switch is classifying it as PD 3 class 7 technically I never have seen anything after class 4 in cisco switch.

You can see here the PD is requesting 13W and the switch (PSE) is allocating the same. So the LLDP negotiation for me is working fine.

May 15 08:33:25.095: Gi1/0/1: LLDP NOTIFY TLV:

    (curr/prev) PSE Allocation: 13000/0

    (curr/prev) PD Request    : 13000/0

It looks that immediately after power is granted, we see a PD removal event
causing the link to go down.

May 15 08:33:25.996: %ILPOWER-5-POWER_GRANTED: Interface Gi1/0/1: Power granted

May 15 08:33:26.115: %LINK-3-UP DOWN: Interface GigabitEthernet1/0/1, changed state to down

May 15 08:33:26.259: ILP State_Machine ( Gi1/0/1 ): State= ILP_LINK_UP_S, Event= IEEE_PD_REMOVAL_EV

So to summarize this I think you need to use an external power injector on the switch 2900-X for this device. For me, its more like the IEEE PD and switch compatibility issue.

Regards,

Priyanka

Hello
Do you have LLDP enabled, if not enable it an see if the power consumption for that device can be discovered and negotiated.
Also, you try manually setting the power on the interface to its highest value and if it works check to see what power is being used and then decrease to that value.

sh power inline
sh power inline gig0/1 consumption
conf t
lldp run

int gig0/1
lldp receive
lldp transmit
power inline consumption 15400 or 30000 (15.4 or 30 watts- switch depending)

Thanks Paul,

I have enabled LLDP and still the same issue.

We are trying to connect to a Paxton Net2 door controller, which does state it supports 802.3af and at, so not not why it works on a 2960S switch but not a 2960X.

regards

Paul.
