3750 switches with redundant power with rps 2300

Hi

Im trying to figure out how the RPS 2300 works, and how to interpret the lights on the 3750`s and the RPS.

So far i figured that the RPS a support two  power failovers at once ( at least reguardeng the  3750).

You need to set the rps in standby mode -  connect the switch - and then activate the rps.
if everything  is working fine - would the rps light on the switch  light green ?

My lights are amber - indicating that the rps is in stanby mode - or there is a faulty power supply.

On my switch i can se these log - messages:

%PLATFORM_ENV-1-PWR_RPS: Redundant power supply faulty or in standby mode

how do i troubleshoot this  ?    The rps is in active mode, så  I guess i have a power issue ?

On another swithc (3750E)  -  the rps is not  supplying with power-  when I disconnect the power.

another thing - the 3750 E  can  change power without the need for rebooting, but for the 3750, it says that it might reboot.
Is there a way for it not to reboot ?

I would appreciate your help, and  hope you can share experiences on this topic !

Hu Tuva,

Check out the Q&A section on the RPS2300.  One questions asks;

http://www.cisco.com/en/US/prod/collateral/switches/ps5718/ps7148/ps7130/prod_qas0900aecd805bbf21.html

Q. How many of the connected switches can be actively backed up with a single Cisco RPS 2300?

A. The number of switches actively backed up by the Cisco RPS 2300 depends on the number and capacity of power supply modules in the RPS and the types of devices they are backing up (Table 1).

Table 1. Number of Switches Actively Backed Up by the Cisco RPS 2300

Cisco RPS 2300 Power Supply Configuration

2 x 750W

1 x 1150W

there is a troubleshooting guide for the RPS2300, see ;

http://www.cisco.com/en/US/docs/switches/power_supplies/rps2300/hardware/installation/guide/rpstrb.html

am i reading that right, that even though the RPS has six ports, it can only power two devices, even with two 1150W power supplies?

and if i only have 2921 routers plugged into it, and i don't have a 3750 switch handy, i can't configure priority on those six rps ports?

  Keep in mind this is used to backup power supplies that go faulty and is not a UPS for when you lose power .  It's highly unlikely you will have more than 2 devices with bad power supplies.  This is meant to keep the device up long enough to get a ps RMA'd and reinstalled.  If you need backup power that is a different solution .
