Hi,
I have a couple of questions about adding a switch to a stack.
We have a 3750x switch stack with 2 switches connected but, not stacking. When the stack was installed they ran out of time trying to get the switches to stack so, the bottom switch is connected via the stack cable to the top switch but is not stacked with the top switch. The bottom switch is just sitting underneath the top switch powered up and connected but not stacked and with no devices connected to it.
I went into the "unstacked" switch via the console and saw that the version was different from the top switch.
The top switch(being used in production) is version: c3750e-universalk9-mz.122-55.SE1.bin
The bottom switch(no devices connected ) is version: c3750e-universalk9-mz.122-55.SE3.bin
Output from the top switch(being used in production)
Switch-Stack#sh switch det
Switch/Stack Mac Address : 6400.f169.2700
H/W Current
Switch# Role Mac Address Priority Version State
----------------------------------------------------------
*1 Master 6400.f169.2700 1 1 Ready
2 Member 0000.0000.0000 0 1 Provisioned
Stack Port Status Neighbors
Switch# Port 1 Port 2 Port 1 Port 2
--------------------------------------------------------
1 Down Down None None
I'm guessing that my versions have to match and that could be why they are not stacking. Is this correct?
Thank you, Pat.

Major revisions must match. Here's a good link on stacking switches.
When you try stacking them again, copy the logs and we'll be able to provide additional help.

I've read the doc but, when I issue the show platform switch manager all command and they both have the same Major release. Shouldn't they stack?
Thank you.

Pat,
To avoid any issues, make sure they are both running the same version and revision. Also make you to have the same license level on both switches,
Stack Port Status Neighbors
Switch# Port 1 Port 2 Port 1 Port 2
--------------------------------------------------------
1 Down Down None None
This output indicated that the there is no stacking cable connected to the device. Once you connect the stacking cable, down should change to ok.

Hi Patrick,
Make sure that stack cable is plugged in properly and all screws are tight.
If status shows Provisioned you need to check
Stack port
Stack Cable
Thanks

It appears they are plugged in correctly. Port 1 on top switch goes t o Port 2 on bottom switch and Port 2 on top switch goes to Port 1 on bottom switch.
"If status shows Provisioned you need to check"
Are you saying that if the status shows provisioned, then I have to check to see if the cables are plugged in correctly?
Thank you, Pat

Hi Pat,

Yes to need to make sure stack cables screw are inserted properly.
If you find that stack cables screws are inserted properly then you can try to change the stack port
Thanks

What does the shut under port mean?
sh stack-power
Power stack name: Powerstack-1
Stack mode: Power sharing strict
Stack topology: Standalone
Switch 1:
Power budget: 223
Low port priority value: 22
High port priority value: 13
Switch priority value: 4
Port 1 status: Shut
Port 2 status: Shut
Neighbor on port 1: 0000.0000.0000
Neighbor on port 2: 0000.0000.0000

Pat,
"shut" in this case means that there in no stacking power cable connected between the switches. The new 3560x and 3750x switches are capable of staking power (maximum of 4 switches). This is in addition to the regular stacking cable for data connectivity. So, if you connect the power cables that comes with the switch, you will see that "shut" will change to "connected"
switch-1------powercable------switch-2

Hey Patrick,
Please avoid using 12.2(55)SE1 or 12.2(55)SE3.
I recommend you look into upgrading to 12.2(55)SE6. It's more stable and has alot of bug fixes than what you are using now.

Ok,
how are the cables connected is it port 1 to 1 and 2 to 2?
Can you apply these command and test again?
Switch(config)# stack-power stack power1
Switch(config-stackpower)# mode redundant
Switch(config-stackpower)# exit
