3750x ports become unusable

Timothy Burns

We are having an odd occurance happening to our 3750x stacks. For no apperent reason ports will become unusable. Doing a shut/no shut on the ports has no effect. The weird thing is that the indicator lights will stay solid green even if there is nothing plugged into them. We had this happen a couple months ago and a reboot fixed the issue. But as it has happened again makes me think that is was not a fluke. As of right now it only effects a few ports.

current code we are running is

Version 12.2(53r)SE2

Has anyone else run into this?

Hello Tim,

Assuming that the mode of LEDs is set to indicate a working L1 connectivity (controlled by the Mode button on the front panel), a port lit green even if no cable is connected is, sadly, usually an indication of a hardware problem. If this problem repeats itself, I am afraid the switch will need to be replaced.

I do not suppose you have configured anything related to a loopback on an interface.

Best regards,

Peter

Thanks for the reply,

No we do not have any loopback on the interaces.

I was hoping it was bug related of some sort.

Tim,

Me not being a Cisco employee, I can not give authoritative comments on what is an IOS bug. It would be quite unusual for an IOS bug to influence the ports in such a strong way that they don't even notice the disconnection of a cable.

It is true that the recent IOS images contain a microcode that is downloaded into port ASICs. Trying to upgrade the IOS can therefore be a viable option to go for but there is sadly no guarantee that it will help.

Best regards,

Peter

Version 12.2(53r)SE2

Without reading any further, this caught my eye.  There is a reason why there are NO MORE further releases to 12.2(53)SE2.

I strongly recommend you think about upgrading your IOS.  I personally would NOT recommend anyone using the "53" series.

We had this happen a couple months ago and a reboot fixed the issue.

I rest my case.
