3750X SFF8472-5-THRESHOLD_VIOLATION

Hi,

I have a 3750X-48T-L in stack running IOS 12.2(58)SE1, connected with 2x1Gb/s in etherchannel to a 3750G-12S stack running IOS 12.2(35)SE5.

The 3750X reports:

May  8 10:01:05: %SFF8472-5-THRESHOLD_VIOLATION: Gi1/1/1: Temperature low alarm; Operating value:  -75.1 C, Threshold value:  -10.0 C.

May  8 10:11:05: %SFF8472-5-THRESHOLD_VIOLATION: Gi1/1/1: Temperature low alarm; Operating value:  -82.9 C, Threshold value:  -10.0 C.

May  8 10:21:06: %SFF8472-5-THRESHOLD_VIOLATION: Gi1/1/1: Temperature low alarm; Operating value:  -90.8 C, Threshold value:  -10.0 C.

May  8 10:31:06: %SFF8472-5-THRESHOLD_VIOLATION: Gi1/1/1: Temperature low alarm; Operating value:  -98.5 C, Threshold value:  -10.0 C.

May  8 10:41:07: %SFF8472-5-THRESHOLD_VIOLATION: Gi1/1/1: Temperature low alarm; Operating value: -106.4 C, Threshold value:  -10.0 C.

May  8 10:51:07: %SFF8472-5-THRESHOLD_VIOLATION: Gi1/1/1: Temperature low alarm; Operating value: -114.5 C, Threshold value:  -10.0 C.

May  8 11:01:08: %SFF8472-5-THRESHOLD_VIOLATION: Gi1/1/1: Temperature low alarm; Operating value: -122.1 C, Threshold value:  -10.0 C.

May  8 11:11:09: %SFF8472-5-THRESHOLD_VIOLATION: Gi1/1/1: Temperature high alarm; Operating value:  126.0 C, Threshold value:   85.0 C.

May  8 11:21:09: %SFF8472-5-THRESHOLD_VIOLATION: Gi1/1/1: Temperature high alarm; Operating value:  118.2 C, Threshold value:   85.0 C.

May  8 11:31:10: %SFF8472-5-THRESHOLD_VIOLATION: Gi1/1/1: Temperature high alarm; Operating value:  110.4 C, Threshold value:   85.0 C.

May  8 11:41:10: %SFF8472-5-THRESHOLD_VIOLATION: Gi1/1/1: Temperature high alarm; Operating value:  102.5 C, Threshold value:   85.0 C.

May  8 11:51:11: %SFF8472-5-THRESHOLD_VIOLATION: Gi1/1/1: Temperature high alarm; Operating value:   94.7 C, Threshold value:   85.0 C.

May  8 12:01:11: %SFF8472-5-THRESHOLD_VIOLATION: Gi1/1/1: Temperature high alarm; Operating value:   86.9 C, Threshold value:   85.0 C.

and this is repeated every 10 min. Faulty SFP or is this an IOS bug?

The temperature conditions in the serverroom are very good, so there is no temp issue.

From the 3750G-12S, I also have another etherchannel to a simmilar 3750X stack, and this also shows the same logging.  This 3750X also runs the same IOS version (12.2(58)SE1). This 3750X also reports

%SFF8472-5-THRESHOLD_VIOLATION: Gi1/1/1: Rx power high alarm; Operating value:  -3.0 dBm, Threshold value:  -5.0 dBm.

every 10 minute.

The SFP used in both 3750X, are Fiberworks SFP 1546nm.

I am also seeing this with a Cisco 3750-X 15.0(1)SE3

Jun 30 23:09:24.344: %SFF8472-5-THRESHOLD_VIOLATION: Te1/1/1: Rx power low warning; Operating value: -16.2 dBm, Threshold value: -14.1 dBm.

Jun 30 23:19:24.545: %SFF8472-5-THRESHOLD_VIOLATION: Te1/1/1: Rx power low warning; Operating value: -15.9 dBm, Threshold value: -14.1 dBm.

Looking for a resolution, will post fix if I can find it....

%SFF8472-5-THRESHOLD_VIOLATION Vs SFF8472-5-THRESHOLD_VIOLATION.

The first one is printed for the ports that are configured, but not connected/active.

You can avoid such error messages simply shutting down unused ports.

The latter indicates that there is a real threshold violation.

Can you please try clearing the interface counters, so that we can notice the frequency of errors.

Also I researched on the logs that we are observing on our device and have seen cases where the issue has been resolved by physically removing and reinserting transceiver.

Probably you are hitting the following bug:

%SFF8472-5-THRESHOLD_VIOLATION: Voltage low alarm; Operating value 0.00V.

Symptom:An error message appears "%SFF8472-5-THRESHOLD_VIOLATION: Te3/0/1: Voltage low alarm; Operating value: 0.00 V, Threshold value: 2.96 V" are seen when the X2-10GB-LR is connected on the tengig interfaces of master/member switch on 3750e stack, with or without the cable connected to it. Conditions:This issue is seen on the WS-C3750E-24PD-E with X2-10GB-LR transceiver on teh tengig interfaces.

Kindly upgrade the 4900 device to code 12.2(55) SE5 which seems to have this error resolved.
