3850 mode in stack

Hi,

When I reload the stack (or a stack member), the LED for mode is in status "STAT". In the documentation ist says that the mode should be "STACK" to use the full bandwidth of the stack ports. Nevertheless...

-> I can not find a documentation that describes the difference between "STAT" and "STACK"

-> It seems there is no configuration command to change the mode, only the button to change it

Any hints there?

Cheers,

Florian

I can not find a documentation that describes the difference between "STAT" and "STACK"

STAT = STATus.  The color and blinking will determine the "health" or status of each individual switch.  Amber/Red are not good.

It seems there is no configuration command to change the mode, only the button to change it

If you continuously press the button (not hold down the button), the LED will cycle through.  Holding down the button for 10 seconds will force the switch to reboot into factory default.  This is dangerous.  You can disable the mode button from "accidentally" erasing the config by using the command "no setup express" in configuration mode.

Hi Leo,

Thank you for your answer, the core of my question is a different one though...I found this statement in the documentation:

http://www.cisco.com/c/en/us/td/docs/switches/lan/catalyst3850/software/release/3se/consolidated_guide/configuration_guide/b_consolidated_3850_3se_cg/b_consolidated_3850_3se_cg_chapter_01101101.html

"After adding or removing stack members, make sure that the switch stack is operating at full bandwidth (480 Gbps). Press the Mode button on a stack member until the Stack mode LED is on"

My point is: What does this mean? How much bandwidth do I lose if I forget to change the mode? Is there really no command or configuration that enables the full bandwidth without me being physically at the remote site and pressing the button (which is kind of ridiculous)?

Cheers,

Florian

Hi,

You should not lose any bandwidth.  If you want to see the full stack bandwidth try this command:

show switch stack-ring speed
